‘songs that won the war’ - Saturday 16 june 2018

In the centenary year marking the end of the First World War, the Maesbury Singers concert focussed on the music of that era, both reflective pieces provoked by the conflict and the morale-boosting songs of the combatants and civilians alike.

The music was interspersed with readings of contemporary poems and letters which were read or performed by local dramatic group, The Croscombe Frolics. These also included two bitter-sweet comedy sketches - ‘In the Trenches’ by The Two Ronnies, and ‘Show us thi medals, Dad!’ by Cliff Gerrard.

The reflective music ranged from Parry’s Songs of Farewell to Walford-Davies’ Requiem and Douglas Guest’s For the Fallen; and the songs included favourites such as Oh! It’s a Lovely War and Keep the Home Fires Burning.

Many of the audience had entered into the spirit of the evening by turning up in appropriate costume, as had the choir, and joined in the well-known songs with gusto!
